Master of Arts in International Communication

A variety of fields of study, including Media Communication, International Relations and Cultural Studies, are drawn on in our program in International Communication (IC). IC is itself a field of study embracing communication and development (theoretical underpinnings of communication and development policy, the strategic options of which include communication development, development communication, development support communication and the communication of development); cross-cultural communication; international telecommunication policy; political economy of IC, international information flows and cultural globalisation.

The MA (International Communication) has a revised structure from 2007. It continues to attract graduates from universities worldwide.

NB. Not all options/ electives will be taught every semester.

All students are required to take:

Intercultural Communication

ICOM 821 Intercultural Communication (4 credit points)

- together with one unit from each of the following three required groups:

A. Cross-Cultural Media Use

ICOM 812 Cross-cultural Communication (4 cp)

ICOM 817 Transnational Communication (4 cp)

B. Political Economy and Development

ICOM 811 Communication and Social, Economic and Political Development

(4 cp)

C. Research Methods

ICOM 818 Research Seminar in International Communication (4cp)

ICOM 828 Special Topic (4 cp)

ICOM 891 Communication Research Methodologies (4cp)

- and four units (4 x 4cp) from the following options:

ICOM812 - Cross-Cultural Communication

ICOM813 - Alternative Video Production (International Communication Flows)

ICOM814 - Development Communication

ICOM815 - Communication and Power Paradigms

ICOM817 - Transnational Communication

ICOM823 - Writing for the Media (Print)

ICOM890 - Digital Audio/Radio Production
