What are the differences between BIC and Media/Communication studies?
Students enrolled in these courses gain theoretical and practical skills relevant to the media and communications sectors. However, students enrolled in BIC will receive greater insight into the international aspects of culture, media and communications. This will prepare graduates of the BIC program for careers with international organisations and dealing with diverse cultural situations.
What type of careers will graduates from BIC pursue?
Using the career destinations of graduates from the Master of International Communication, it is likely that graduates of the BIC will find employment in a diverse range of media and communications positions across public relations, advertising, media, telecommunications, policy and diplomacy sectors in Australia and abroad.
Can students do double degrees with BIC? And what are possible other degrees?
The Department of International Communication is developing relationships with other departments within Macquarie University and intends offering double degrees for appropriately qualified students. These relationships are expected to be in place in later years. Currently IC has double degrees at Postgraduate level with Master in International Business and International Relations.
Are students required to study in other countries/overseas while studying BIC?
Many students want to study in BIC because they think that the course would require them to travel/study in other countries.
Macquarie University has an extensive exchange programs with a number of universities and institutions overseas. Students enrolled in BIC may take advantage of these exchanges and use credits gained to support their academic program.
Do students have to know other languages to study BIC?
No. However, they may have more chance to work overseas when they graduate if they can communicate in other languages or they may have more chance to take overseas internship.
Languages can be taken as elective studies in formal BIC degree program. Check pre-requisites in your chosen program.
Can students defer the course?
Yes, if they provide an appropriate reason with supporting evidence. Examples might be inability to study due to a medical condition or the offer of work overseas.

Students can seek course, career and other advice from the Dr Qin Guo. Dr Guo lectures ICOM units at the Department of International Communication. She is former professor of Educational Communication and Technology in China. In the past 20 years, she has worked internationally as an educator and researcher in the area of media and communications. Check consultation hours or make an appointment to discuss your concerns with Dr Qin Guo.
