Bachelor of International Communication

Overview

The Bachelor in International Communication is a three-year degree program designed for students who are interested in developing skills and knowledge for careers in the media, advertising, public relations, policy, diplomacy and related fields.

Established in 2002, the degree directs students towards understanding the issues of communication between people across cultures in social, organisational and interpersonal contexts. This insight is carried through the teaching in the program in areas relevant to professional practice in media and communications industries. In particular, the degree investigates the theory of international communication through case studies of global events, interpersonal relationships and industrial practices alongside instruction in media writing, multimedia and business communication. Students are encouraged to develop empathy for people from other cultures in order to bridge the divides that often emerge between societies due to misunderstandings and misperceptions. This empathy will support engagement in the big-picture of international affairs and underpin personal careers in global business, media and policy arenas.

Alongside investigation of media-related theory and practices, the degree offers considerable flexibility in elective studies. Students have completed programs that have included languages, political science, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, women ’s studies and many other personal preferences.
